Adherence to the old

When the first settlers arrived on America’s shores, they were surrounded with unkown territory. This journey was about discovery. Weeks of sea away from home, and foreign trees, grass, climate, with strange looking, hostile natives – this was not what the new settlers expected.

The Puritans made efforts to retain old nomenclature in law, practices and customs from England which never had seen an easier time to be replaced with new forms of culture, and they resisted change.

What do we cling to, only because it reminds us of the old? What else do we cling to only because it was there first in our human experience?
